SXSW EDU: Teaching Math Through Movement and SEL

February 6, 2019 – Amy Tepperman, a kinesthetic and holistic learning specialist and Founder of Moving EDGEucation, will lend her expertise to SXSW’s annual EDU Conference & Festival on March 6, 2019. Her interactive workshop, entitled “Using Movement & SEL to Teach Math” will invite educators to think outside the box and use their own bodies and classroom communities as tools for teaching math concepts like patterning, fractions, geometry and more. Imagine a classroom where students learn up on their feet, moving to music.

Tepperman has worked in public elementary schools facilitating movement-based educational workshops since 2010. She and her team at Moving EDGEucation have worked with thousands of students and teachers to integrate movement and SEL methods into their daily curriculum. Her work and teaching philosophy, which focuses on engaging the entire self while promoting both unity and individuality while learning, are used in classrooms across Canada and have been presented at industry leading conferences including The "Canadian Principals Association", "Ontario Math Educators", "Global Physical Literacy Summit" and "Global Youth Leadership Summit".

“Keeping students engaged in a sedentary environment is a challenge many educators are facing. I am thrilled to share my work and ideas with them at SXSW EDU and demonstrate how they can easily integrate movement and SEL methods into their math curriculum, supporting both the learning process, and health and well-being of students,” said Amy Tepperman, Education Director and Founder of Moving EDGEucation. “This is not an add-on to the curriculum, but a different way of delivering it where physical activity, creativity and connection to self and others become a part of regular teaching practice.”

Tepperman’s session was selected to be part of the conference by Panel Picker, a digital crowd-sourcing platform that tallies votes from SXSW EDU’s Advisory Board (40%), the public (30%) and staff (30%). Focused on engaging and connecting a global community of educators with workshops, networking events and more, this year’s four-day conference is estimated to see a total attendance of more than 15,000 guests.
