Vive les Livres! The Word on the Street Welcomes Esteemed French Authors

Toronto, August 30, 2018 - The Word On The Street, Canada’s largest free outdoor book and magazine festival, is pleased to partner with the Conseil scolaire Viamonde for the first time for La scène francophone Viamonde. The Conseil scolaire Viamonde manages French-language public schools in the central south-western region of Ontario. On this stage, The Word On The Street will present engaging readings and book signings with some of the best in French literature from 14 authors from across Canada. The Word On The Street takes place on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. La scène Viamonde francophone will feature Franco-Canadian authors including 2018 Champlain Literary Award winner Marie Cadieux (Histoire de galet); Trillium Book Award winner and children's author Daniel Marchildon (Otages de la nature); celebrated children’s author Mireille Messier (Tellement Sauvage); professional translator Marie-Jo Gonny (Le legs d'Eva); and journalist Samuel LaRochelle (Lilie: L'apprentie parfaite). 


Spreading the joy of reading with children and parents, the Conseil scolaire Viamonde will welcome fairy storyteller and author Cindy Roy to the stage as her infamous character Féeli Tout. Féeli Tout is a curious fairy from New Brunswick whose storytelling skills and "magic tricks" captivate children's attention and introduce them to the wonder of books. Since 2012, Féeli Tout has visited schools, daycares, libraries, bookfairs and bookstores across Canada, looking for young listeners to hear her adventures and discover the amazing world of reading. The Word On The Street will also feature children’s activities such as face painting, music, and other performances throughout TD KidStreet.

French-speaking visitors will also have an opportunity to compete in the free Franco’Open Mic poetry slam for a chance to win $500. Created in 2014, Franc’Open Mic is the first francophone open stage in Toronto for all the performing arts and offer a space where people can share their artistry in French in front of a receptive audience. Organizers Cyril Mignotet and Florian François will also host a workshop to help participants develop creativity, imagination and writing techniques in French through games and group exercises. 

In addition, La scène francophone Viamonde will include two panels featuring finalists for the 2018 Prix Trillium, awarded by Ontario Creates (the Ontario Media Development Corporation): The Prix Trillium: Littérature panel will consist of Didier LeClair (Le bonheur est un parfum sans nom), Aurélie Resch (Sous le soleil de midi; Coquelicot sur un rocher), and Blaise Ndala (Sans capote ni kalachnikov); and the Prix Trillium: Poesie panel will include Sudbury’s poet laureateChloé LaDuchesse (Furies) and science fiction writer Sylvie Bérard (Oubliez).

This stage will also include renowned Quebec authors Élise Turcotte (Le lac de singes),Caroline Merola (La bête à 4 z'yeux); and Alain Beaulieu (Malek et moi).


The Word On The Street will welcome special guest hosts author Vanessa Bell (Les libraires), actress Geneviève Langlois and award winning author A.M. Matte.

Each September, in the cities of Toronto, Halifax, Lethbridge, Saskatoon, and Kitchener, The Word On The Street unites the country in a national celebration of literacy and the written word. Annually attracting more than 200,000 visitors, The Word On The Street Toronto is the largest book and magazine festival in Canada. This year’s event takes place on Sunday, September 23, at Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West). Admission is free.
