INSIDE OUT WRAPS AND ANNOUNCES AWARD WINNERS FOR 27TH EDITION

The rainbow curtain has closed on this year’s Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival following its successful 11-day run at TIFF Bell Lightbox. The Festival capped off its 27th year with an Awards Brunch on Sunday to recognize award recipients. Films honoured include winner of Best Narrative Feature Sisterhood (Macau/Hong Kong/ Taiwan); winner of Best Canadian Feature, Rebels on Pointe; and God's Own Country (UK), which recieved the Bill Sherwood Award for Best First Feature.

Inside Out presented three award categories including the Audience Awards, Canadian Juried Awards and International Juried Awards. The Festival also revealed the winners of the Inside Out BravoFACT Pitch Competition. RBC Royal Bank returned as the Festival’s Presenting Sponsor and CTV as the Premier Sponsor. The 2017 Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival took place at TIFF Bell Lightbox from May 25 to June 4. For more information, visit insideout.ca.

Audience Awards:

Best Narrative Feature 
Sisterhood (Macau/Hong Kong/ Taiwan), directed by Tracy Choi
Sponsored by Suzy Zucker, this generous $2,500 cash award was presented to the audience’s favourite feature-length film.
 
Best Documentary Film
Chavela (USA), directed by Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi
Sponsored by Cindy Cross, this generous  $1,250 cash award was presented to the audience’s favourite feature-length documentary film.
 
Best Short Film 
Picture This (Canada), directed by Jari Osborne

Sponsored by Michael Leshner and Michael Stark (in honour of Mikey/Schmikey).
This $1,500 cash award was presented to a short film under 50 minutes in length.
 
Canadian Juried Awards: 
This year’s jury included Daniela Costa (film critic and member of the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association), Joachim Post (programmer for the Hamburg International Queer Film Festival and freelance journalist) and Sam Tabet (producer and founder of the Queer Producers Collective).
 
Best Canadian Feature 
Rebels on Pointe (Canada), directed by Bobbi Jo Hart
Sponsored by EP Canada/Canada Film Capital, this $2,000 cash award was presented to an established Canadian artist for their short or feature-length narrative or documentary film.
 
Emerging Canadian Artist 
Tapette (Canada), directed by Olivier Perrier
Sponsored by RBC Royal Bank, this $2,500 cash award funded by the presenting sponsor was awarded to an emerging Canadian filmmaker who is in the early stages of their career.
 
Best Canadian Short
Picture This (Canada), directed by Jari Osborne
Sponsored by REVRY TV, this $500 cash award was presented to a Canadian filmmaker for their short-form narrative or documentary film.
*Honourable mention: Apart From Everything (Canada), directed by Ben Lewis 

International Juried Awards:
This year’s jury included Andrew Ahn (filmmaker, award-winning Spa Night), Kate Johnston (writer/director/producer, award-winning Tru Love) and Brittani Nicholas (writer/producer, award-winning Suicide Kale).
 
Bill Sherwood Award for Best First Feature
God's Own Country (UK), directed by Francis Lee
Named in honour of the gay American film director, who stepped boldly onto the international film stage in 1986 with his first feature, Parting Glances, this $2,500 cash award is an international prize presented to a first time feature director.
 
BravoFACT Pitch Competition:
Five teams were selected to pitch their short narrative film projects in front of a jury of industry experts. The winning team was presented a cash prize of $50,000 from BravoFACT to fund the creation of the project. The winning project will screen at the 2018 Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival.
