LOS ANGELES, CA, January 9, 2024 – The Canadian entertainment industry is gearing up for a momentous celebration, proudly recognizing the remarkable accomplishments of its finest talent at the 75th Annual Emmy Awards. The Consul General of Canada in Los Angeles, Zaib Shaikh, alongside Canada's Ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, will open the doors to Canada's House on Thursday, January 11 for this year’s Canada at the Emmys® event in LA. This private reception, co-hosted by the Canada Media Fund (CMF) and in partnership with the Province of Alberta, the City of Calgary and the City of Edmonton, pays tribute to this year's Emmy nominees, highlighting the exceptional contributions of Canadian artisans and television stars to the global entertainment landscape.
This year's honorees feature the beloved Canadian comedy icon Martin Short, a seasoned Emmy veteran boasting 15 nominations and two wins. Short continues his impressive streak with yet another nomination for his outstanding leading role in the Disney+ murder-mystery comedy Only Murders in the Building. Accompanying him in the comedy category is Luke Kirby, securing another guest actor nomination for his stellar portrayal of Lenny Bruce in Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Additionally, making his Emmy debut is Lamar Johnson, earning a nomination for his compelling guest role in HBO's dystopian zombie drama, The Last of Us.

Canadian nominees also include: composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer, recognized for his musical work on the HBO satire The White Lotus Season 2; Montreal's Antoni Porowski, one of the hosts of Netflix’s Queer Eye, secured his fourth nomination in the Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Competition Program category; Acclaimed writer/actor Susan Coyne, making her Emmy debut, earned a nomination as the Co-Executive Producer of Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & The Six; Award-winning production designer Paul Healy received an Emmy nomination for his work on The Last of Us; and Adam Haisinger who is nominated in the Outstanding Cinematography For A Reality Program as part of the team behind The Amazing Race.

Noteworthy documentary nominations include Apple TV's Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie and Netflix's Pamela, A Love Story, both nominated in the Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Special category. The Michael J. Fox documentary received nods in multiple categories, including Outstanding Directing for a Documentary and Outstanding Cinematography for a Non-Fiction program.

Canadian talent also excelled in below-the-line categories this year, showcasing their exceptional contributions behind the camera. Notably, Alberta-shot series The Last of Us and Toronto-shot productions What We Do in the Shadows, Umbrella Academy and Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities had numerous Canadian professionals garnering Emmy nominations. These nominations span across critical below-the-line disciplines, including production design, hairstyling, costume design, sound mixing, and visual effects. The recognition of these skilled individuals underscores the depth and breadth of Canada's impact on the global television industry in both on-screen performances and behind-the-scenes craftsmanship.
In addition to celebrating this year’s Emmy nominees, the Consul General of Canada to Los Angeles will present Keys to the Consulate to this year's honourees, music icon Robbie Robertson (posthumously) and Kirk Pickersgill, founder of award-winning fashion label Greta Constantine to receive this year's Keys to the Consulate. Robertson’s wife Janet Zuccarini and Pickersgill will be in attendance and will join Emmy nominees Lamar Johnson, Luke Kirby, Susan Coyne, Paul Healy, Adam Haisinger, previous Key to the Consulate recipients Shamier Anderson and Tantoo Cardinal, alongside numerous other celebrated Canadians as Canada’s House welcomes some of the year’s most exciting talent.
This celebration at the Consul General of Los Angeles House underscores the importance of recognizing and promoting Canadian talent on the international stage. The event will serve as a platform to acknowledge the outstanding accomplishments of these honourees and to enhance the cultural exchange between Canada and the United States.
About Zaib Shaikh
Zaib Shaikh began his mandate as Consul General of Canada in Los Angeles in December 2018. He is the Government of Canada’s senior representative in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. He comes to the posting after an extensive career in the media and entertainment industries, having worked as an actor and producer in theatre, film and television. His work includes acting roles in Deepa Mehta’s film Midnight’s Children, as well as starring in the CBC comedy series Little Mosque on the Prairie, which has been seen in more than 80 countries. Mr. Shaikh coâ€produced the special Long Story Short: CBC Turns 75 and coâ€wrote, directed and coproduced the film Othello: The Tragedy of the Moor. He also co-founded and served as an artistic producer of the Whistler Theatre Project in British Columbia. From 2014 until his appointment in 2018, Mr. Shaikh was the Film Commissioner and Director of Entertainment Industries for the City of Toronto. In that role, he oversaw and grew the city’s screen, music, live festival, sporting event and tourism sectors, helping to double the value of film production in Canada’s largest city, which surpassed $2 billion in 2016. Mr. Shaikh has served as a board member for the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion and, most recently on the board of AFC (formerly the Actors Fund of Canada). He has served on juries and committees for the Gemini Awards, ACTRA Awards, Ontario Arts Council, and Theatre Ontario Youth Program as well as an ambassador for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and for Amnesty International Canada. Mr. Shaikh is married to Ms. Kirstine Stewart. They have two children.
