“An old-fashioned, big-hearted, spare-no-expense Broadway romance”
– The Wall Street Journal
Toronto, ON, (TSX: CGX), June 6, 2018 – Cineplex Events and Trafalgar Releasing announced today that the “City of Light” is coming soon to Cineplex theatres across Canada. Captured live from London’s West End, audiences can experience the highly-acclaimed and dazzling musical An American in Paris: The Musical on the big screen beginning September 20, 2018.
This new rendition of An American in Paris premiered in 2014 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris to ecstatic reviews before transferring to the Palace Theatre on Broadway, where it became the most awarded musical of the 2015/16 season, including winning four Tony® Awards. Following a successful run in Toronto as part of the overall North American tour, theatre enthusiasts from across Canada will have a chance to experience the magic of the hit musical on the big screen this fall.
Inspired by the Oscar® winning MGM film of the same name, An American In Paris tells the impassioned story of discovering love in the ‘City of Light’ in 1945. The play follows Jerry Mulligan, an American GI striving to make it as a painter in a city suddenly bursting with hope and possibility. Following a chance encounter with a beautiful young dancer named Lise, the streets of Paris become the backdrop to a sensuous, modern romance of art, friendship and love in the aftermath of war.
An American In Paris stars Tony® Award nominees Robert Fairchild as Jerry Mulligan and Leanne Cope as Lise Dassin, reprising their roles from the original Broadway production. An American In Paris also features a company of over 50 actors, dancers and musicians including Haydn Oakley as Henri Baurel, Zoë Rainey as Milo Davenport, David Seadon-Young as Adam Hochberg and Jane Asher as Madame Baurel.
The breathtakingly beautiful new musical features the music and lyrics of George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin (including the classic hits ‘S Wonderful and I Got Rhythm) as well as direction and choreography by the internationally renowned Christopher Wheeldon, recipient of the 2015 Tony® Award for Best Choreographer for this production.
